Pope Benedict XVI paraded through the streets of Washington on Wednesday, the day of his birthday. This marks the second time a pope has ever visited Washington , and the first time this pope visited the White House. The pope’s visit sparked protests over the Vatican ’s stances on various social issues, including abortion, gay rights and the war in Iraq .
