Thousands of protesters led by Iraq war veterans marched from the White House to Capitol Hill on September 15, demanding that Congress and President Bush withdraw all U.S. troops from Iraq.

Protestors across the nation arrived by bus to attend the rally, which included speakers like anti-war liberals Ralph Nader and Cindy Sheehan. Groups concerned with Palestine, Communism and animal cruelty were also represented.

Code Pink, an anti-war women’s group, dressed entirely in pink and chanted the group’s message to tunes of children’s songs such as “Frère Jacques.”

The march ended on the lawn of the Capitol where some protesters collapsed and lay death-like. According to news reports, police arrested at least 160 people who participated in the “die-in.”

Overall the march was peaceful with only a smattering of opposition from counter protestors. A Republican from Chicago said the protest was a waste of tax payer’s money. Two young men from George Washington University shouted at protesters.

ANSWER, the activist group who organized the march, reported 100,000 people came out in protest. News accounts put the number much lower, in the tens of thousands.
